Musicians...Building??? by Phil Here's a little 5th Tuesday bonus for you... In the Old Testament book of Nehemiah, after the wall was rebuilt, the people returned to Jerusalem and had a big dedication service. As I was reading through the account in chapter 12, something jumped out at me that most people overlook. It's probably because of my life experience, but this seemed almost miraculous to me... "The musicians also were brought together from the region around Jerusalem—from the villages of the Netophathites, from Beth Gilgal, and from the area of Geba and Azmaveth, for the musicians had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem. - Nehemiah 12:28-29 Musicians have the reputation, (mostly well earned,) of not being the most organized, forward thinking, and financially sound individuals. On top of that, they are often lacking in skills of any practical use. (Ask Pam about the time I tried to install a water softener in our first house.) I believe it was musicians who invented the term "couch surfing," which means sleeping on someone's sofa until they get fed up and kick you out. If you've spent as much time around musicians as I have over the years, the fact that this Biblical group got together and stayed focused long enough to build entire villages for themselves is amazing. Granted, the Bible doesn't say they were "nice" villages, or would pass any kind of building safety inspection, but still! Kudos gents, play on! Click Here to Check our Concert Schedule! Come to the Table - Part 2 by Phil Last time we looked at a dramatic interpretation of the Lord's Supper we shared recently at our church. You may remember that the reading ended, "Together, their voices rose softly in a traditional Passover hymn, filling the small room with warmth and strength. As their song drifted on the night air, Jesus looked around the room at his companions. No longer just followers, now friends. As he studied each face, his lips curved into a smile of enduring love."...
Come to the Table - Part 1 by Phil The schedule which we celebrate Communion or The Lord's Supper varies widely among churches. I grew up in a church where it was observed every week, and I've been part of churches that celebrate it monthly, quarterly, on special occasions, or whenever the mood struck. No matter how often we break the bread and drink the cup, there can be a danger of it becoming "routine" and losing the deep significance of the moment. The last time we celebrated The Lord's...
Mowing in the Dark by Phil It has been HOT in Kansas City. Normally, heat like this means the grass goes dormant so I don't have to mow as often. Unfortunately, the weeds don’t seem to mind the high temperatures at all—they just keep flourishing. Most mornings, by the time the dew has evaporated, it’s already pushing 100°. Some of my more adventurous neighbors mow in the heat of the afternoon, but I happen to be allergic to perspiration and general discomfort. So, I wait to mow until the sun...
