Previously on Adventures of the Ark...

Back in 1 Samuel the Israelites messed up and lost the Ark of the Covenant that got passed around the Philistine cities like an ugly sweater at a Christmas gift exchange. We pick up the story as the Ark is ready to make it's way back home to Israel...

After seven months of plague and suffering, the Philistines are ready to send the Ark back where it came from. They decide it would be best to include a little gift to say, "Sorry we took your God box, no hard feelings?" This is another of those times when they should have asked their wives, because guys are just no good at picking gifts. They decide to make golden replicas of the rats and tumors that God had inflicted them with while in possession of the Ark. Considering some texts say "tumors of the groin," I don't even want to know what those golden pieces looked like. For sure, that's nothing you'd likely display on the mantle.

So the Philistines got a cart, put the ark and a chest containing their golden gross gifts on it, hitched up two cows and said, "Bye, bye!" The cows headed straight for the Israelite town of Beth Shemesh. The Beth Shemites were out harvesting wheat when the cows pulled into town. They said, "Look! It's the Ark of the Covenant and a little box of ... ugh, that's disgusting. Anyway, let's celebrate with an offering to the Lord!"

Now, you might think the Israelites would think, "These are the cows that have restored the glory of the Lord to His people! We shall call them blessed bovines, build them a nice barn with plenty of fresh hay, and milk them with a soft and gentle hand." You would be wrong. Instead, the Israelites said, "We need something to use for a burnt offering. Hey look, these two cows will do!" So they killed them, burned them, and had a party.

There is more to the story, but this is a good place to glean our lesson for the day. Throughout history, many people who should have been celebrated for sharing the good news of Jesus were instead killed as martyrs. So what are we to do? Stop sharing the story? Heavens no! Keep telling people about Jesus, they need Him now as much as ever before. But don't be disappointed if there is no applause and adoration.

Just be happy they don't cook you.

Doggone Dagon by Phil Remember the old commercial where none of the kids want to eat the cereal so they finally say, "Give it to Mikey, he'll eat anything!"? The same thing happened with the Ark of the Covenant back in Samuel's day. This was long before Indiana Jones rescued it from the Nazis. (Indy was fiction, but the real story is even better!) Let's set the scene: Back in 1 Samuel chapter 4, the Israelites take on the Philistines and lose big time. The elders are reviewing the game tape...

Howdy! Eye update. Thanks for all the prayers and comments about my recent vision dilemma. I saw the Retina specialist and my surgeon last Thursday and here is the latest. Things are improving, but still lots of junk inside the eye. (I think it must take after my garage) We have surgery scheduled for the 29th. They are concerned there is a tear in my retina in the bottom of my eye, but there is too much blood pooled to tell. Three options on 29th: 1. Clearing out on it’s own/no tear - cancel...

Hi there friends and eNeighbors! Sorry this is coming out a bit late, but what a month we’ve had! Some of you have probably been keeping up with my (Phil's) exploits on Facebook, but for the rest: fasten your seatbelts, this is quite a ride! On August 31, I finally got the go-ahead for cataract surgery in my left eye. (The right was done 13 years ago, but this one was slower to cloud up.) The surgery was performed on Tuesday, September 15, and everything seemed fine... until the next day!...
