The EYES have it! by Phil Yesterday afternoon I had an appointment to have my left eye evaluated for cataract surgery. I know from past experience that the doctor always dilates my eyes for exams and it takes forever for the effect to wear off, so I crammed as much into my morning as possible. I was a man on a mission! I started writing devotions at 6:30am (Yes, my musician friends, there is a 6:30 in the morning, too!) I moved a china cabinet for Pam's mom, I did a little shopping for my mom and delivered it. I helped figure out some financial questions about my mom's new apartment. I had a sense of urgency, because I knew in the afternoon I would be "in the dark" with my big sunglasses waiting for my eyes to focus again. That reminded me of the words of Jesus in John 9:4 - "As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work." Google AI breaks down the meaning like this... Daytime represents the time of opportunity, life, and the presence of Jesus to do God's work. Nighttime represents death, the end of earthly life, or a time when action is no longer possible. The message encourages believers to use their time wisely to serve God and help others before their opportunity passes. The older I get, the more I realize that "Night" is not just about when I die. The farther down life's road I go, the less parts of me seem to work! The ears, the eyes, the knees, the back... ouch! Getting older shouldn't be an excuse sit back relax in complacency. Aging should bring a sense of urgency to work for God with what abilities we still have because we know our opportunity is fading. As I often say, "If you're still breathing, God's not done with you!" You may feel like you've never been this old before, but you'll never be this young again. Night is coming for all of us, but right now it is still daytime! Time is short, don't waste it! I'll leave you with this instruction from the writer of Hebrews, "But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called 'Today,' so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness." - Hebrews 3:13 Still working for Jesus, Click Here to Check our Concert Schedule! When I study the Bible, I often look for the obscure details, things that are mentioned in passing and commonly skimmed over. The third chapter of Nehemiah is just the opposite.
