The Benefits of Getting Old

The Benefits of Getting Old by Phil

Growing older isn't for the faint of heart. Things that used to work don't work anymore, and things that still work, hurt. I've heard your memory is the second thing to go... but I can't remember the first. Sure, I could grumble about these inconveniences, but I choose to see them as blessings.

I can't see as good as I used to, but the people I hang around with don't look as good as they used to so that's probably not a bad thing. In fact, I wouldn't want a clearer picture of what I see in the mirror! Gravity and gravy are not kind.

I can't hear as good as I used to, but it seems like the people doing the most talking today have the least to say. I do find I talk to myself more these days - it's nice to have an intelligent conversation once in a while, and we agree on most stuff. There's always plenty to talk about. We've probably talked about it before, but neither one of us can remember if we did.

Which brings us full circle to memory or the lack thereof. When we were kids, everything was brand new so the world was full of wonders. As we get older, we've seen almost everything many times before, so having a short memory brings back the wonder. I wonder where I left my keys? I wonder where I left my glasses? I wonder what I walked into this room for? I wonder if I've written this devotional thought before?

Oh well, every day we live brings us one day closer to heaven where we'll get brand new bodies! We'll have perfect eyes and lots of new sights to see. We'll have perfect ears to hear the very voice of Jesus! And we'll have perfect minds with awesome new experiences worth remembering. And best of all, Jesus will provide the transportation! We'll rise to meet Him in the air - no car needed!

Which is good, because I still can't remember where I put my keys.

Good stuff coming!

ADVENT IN THE WOODSHOP - Part two, PEACE We continue our look at Advent through eyes of a wood turner. Last time we selected a chunk of wood in hope of a masterpiece hiding inside. Now it's time to chuck it onto the lathe. We start by trying to find the approximate center of the piece. No matter how close we get, the odd shape of the rough wood will cause the lathe to shake a bit as it turns. We ease the roughing gouge slowly toward the spinning wood and it jumps and jerks in our hands as the...

Welcome to December! It snowed here in KC on the first, so that must mean the holiday season is officially here. In this busy time of year, we pray you take time to savor each moment and remember the great gift from God we celebrate with Jesus' birth. This marks the 25th year of our weekly devotions. Phil wrote the first one on December 28, 1999. (We'll include it below.) We've lost count, but over these 25 years, the number of devotions has climbed into the thousands. Our intention was to...

Home by Phil Last month Pam and I took a little trip to Maine to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. It was a wonderful, relaxing vacation with plenty of lighthouses for Pam and lobsters for me! I'm already wondering what I'll eat, I mean where we'll go for #36. We've spent many nights in various hotels and guest homes during our lives on the road. When I wake up at night (usually because I have to go to the bathroom), I'm not immediately sure where I am. I have to look around to jog my...
