Home by Phil

Last month Pam and I took a little trip to Maine to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. It was a wonderful, relaxing vacation with plenty of lighthouses for Pam and lobsters for me! I'm already wondering what I'll eat, I mean where we'll go for #36.

We've spent many nights in various hotels and guest homes during our lives on the road. When I wake up at night (usually because I have to go to the bathroom), I'm not immediately sure where I am. I have to look around to jog my memory and remember the lay of the land (aka, where is the bathroom?). There is always a bit of stress involved in this location confusion, the amount being directly proportional to how much tea I drank the night before.

For the first time ever, a few nights after we returned home I experienced this phenomenon again. There was a difference here though. When my brief confusion subsided I was flooded with a warm peace knowing I was home. (I didn't linger in that peaceful feeling for too long, or I would have been flooded by something else warm and not nearly so pleasing.)

Once of these days I'll wake up and I won't be in my bed. In fact, I won't even be in this world any longer. I might have a moment of disorientation, but that will soon fade away to a peace deeper than any I've experienced in this life. I can only imagine the smile on my face when I realize... I'm Home.

This Thanksgiving when we are thankful for family coming to visit our home, (and possibly more thankful when they return to their own homes), I'm going to say an extra prayer of thanks to the One who prepared a place that is waiting just for me. A place that will truly be, for all eternity... Home.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Phil and Pam

Do As The Romans Do by Phil In their heyday, the ancient Romans had several military formations for soldiers going into battle. One of these was called the Testudo (or tortoise). The soldiers would march in rows in the shape of a square, with the first row holding their large shields in front. The sides and back would also hold their shields to the sides and behind, while the inner soldiers would hold their shields overhead. In this formation, each soldier was not only covering himself, but...

The Path by Phil We are a couple of weeks into the Lenten season. Believe it or not, Lent is not just about Friday Fish Frys at the Catholic church (although I do appreciate some tasty filets!). It is a 40 day focus on seeking God, denying self, and serving others in remembrance of Christ's 40 days of temptation in the desert. The purpose is to prepare for the Resurrection of Jesus at Easter through repentance, reflection, and spiritual renewal. Some denominations observe Lent and others...

Second Chances by Phil Depending on when you are reading this, Valentine's Day has most likely come and gone. Guys, I hope you came through with flying colors and made your little lady feel like Queen of the castle. If that's the case, you can skip this devotion. Now, for the rest of you, I understand how we fellows sometimes misread a situation. I remember one wedding anniversary early in our ministry when I thought Pam would love to celebrate by doing a concert on that day. WRONG. I was...
