Q and A, The Old-Fashioned Way by Phil Have you ever heard the phrase, "Throw out the baby with the bath water?" Sometimes in our quest to be more efficient or accurate, we discard some pretty useful stuff. For example... Many more "liturgical" denominations use catechisms. Before you pick up your “we only use the Bible” stones to throw my direction, catechisms are merely a teaching tool for explaining Christian doctrine, often in the form of a series of questions and answers. Sort of a medieval text book! They can still be a great tool to help us answer both what we believe and why we believe it. "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." 1 Peter 3:15 For example, take a look at the first question of the Heidelberg Catechism written way back in 1563... Q. What is your only comfort in life and death? A. That I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, He also preserves me in such a way Therefore, by his Holy Spirit As James Luther Adams said, “An unexamined faith is not worth having, for it can only be true by accident. The EYES have it! by Phil Yesterday afternoon I had an appointment to have my left eye evaluated for cataract surgery. I know from past experience that the doctor always dilates my eyes for exams and it takes forever for the effect to wear off, so I crammed as much into my morning as possible. Next to who? by Phil Last time we talked about taking the first step to get involved at church. Now, let's take it a step further... When I study the Bible, I often look for the obscure details, things that are mentioned in passing and commonly skimmed over. The third chapter of Nehemiah is just the opposite. The phrase “next to him” or something similar occurs over 25 times in that chapter! Seems like ole Nehi might have been trying to tell us something. The chapter is a virtual walk around...
