Jesus in Aisle Seven by Phil Hello, my name is Phil, and I am an extrovert. (Sounds like I’m at an Extroverts Anonymous meeting, but extroverts are anything but anonymous!) I don’t know a stranger—just friends I haven’t met yet. I can’t even go to Walmart without striking up at least five conversations with people I don't know. Why do I do this? Partly because I’m wired this way, but mostly to see the smiles I leave behind. It’s so much fun to see someone’s face light up when I compliment them on an outfit or a hat. And what mama doesn’t love to hear someone comment on how well her kids are behaving? I remember a recent encounter in the canned goods aisle at the grocery store. This precious lady ended up giving me her recipe for baked beans, which sounded delicious! Side Note: Never get recipes from skinny people unless you want to be skinny. My motto is: you can’t have Yummy without a little Tummy. I told her about a bacon-flavored mayonnaise I discovered recently. While I was still in that aisle, I grabbed an extra bottle and gave it to her when I bumped into her again. By her reaction, you would have thought I’d given her a Christmas present! Everybody you meet is struggling with something. Even though they may not realize or admit it, everyone needs to know they are seen, appreciated, and worthy of someone’s attention. I think that may have been what attracted people to Jesus. According to Isaiah’s prophecy: “He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.”−Isaiah 53:2 Aside from a few moments of righteous anger, Jesus didn’t appear to rely on a flashy, super-charismatic personality. So why did people flock to Him? Why did fishermen drop everything when He simply said, “Come, follow me”? I believe those who encountered Jesus in person felt truly seen, understood, and valued. I’ve never met Him in the flesh, but I certainly feel that way every day. The goal of our walk with the Lord is to become more like Jesus. Why not start at the grocery store or Walmart? It’s amazing how a little step outside your comfort zone can make such a massive impact on the people God puts in your path. • A warm smile All of these are such simple gestures, but each one shows someone else they matter. For you introverts, this may take a bit more effort at first, but once you see the results, you‘ll be hooked. Besides, taking our eyes off ourselves for a moment is never a bad thing. The first step to sharing Jesus with someone is showing Jesus to someone. If you love Him, act like it! Go show some of His love to the people you meet today! Repurposed by Phil At the beginning of this month, we sold our equipment trailer.
