It's Not The Socks

It's Not The Socks by Phil

Part of my responsibility at Big Creek Baptist Church where I am leading worship on Sunday mornings is to select the songs for each service. The pastor gives me the scripture for his sermon and I search for songs that will enhance that theme and tie the whole service together into one continuous worship experience. I've stressed many times that my goal is not just for us to sing songs that are familiar or create a warm and fuzzy emotional high, I want all of us to pay attention to the words we are singing. When Jesus said that we should "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." - Mark 12:30, I don't think He meant for us to separate those into four separate activities. The wonderful thing about music is it allows us to engage with God with our mind, heart, and soul all at the same time!

I also believe that preparing for worship on Sunday shouldn't start with trying to find a pair of matching socks. Our time of worship will be so much stronger if we come into the sanctuary with hearts prepared and eager to see what God has in store. With that in mind, I've started writing a short breakdown of some of the lyrics for the upcoming service in the Friday church email. Pastor Jason has been preaching through the book of Matthew and last Sunday the scripture was Matthew 5:17-20 about Jesus fulfilling the Old Testament law. One of the songs I selected was "Rock of Ages" and I thought you might enjoy seeing my take-away from the second verse. Here's last week's Sunday prep devo...

Many today feel there is a disconnect between the God of the Old Testament and Jesus in the New. They wonder how a God of justice and apparent vengeance can also be a God of love and mercy. Unfortunately, the conclusion is often that the New Testament negated and essentially voided the Old. Jesus' explanation in this week's scripture should make that misconception abundantly clear when He said, "Don’t think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish but to fulfill." -Matt 5:17. The demands and standards God established thousands of years ago are still valid and in place. The good news is that what we could never accomplish and satisfy on our own, Jesus once and for all completely fulfilled! Praise the Lord!

Let's take a deeper look at a lyric we'll be singing this Sunday...

Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law's demands;

- we can't do enough...

could my zeal no respite know,

- we can't be earnest and
sincere enough...

could my tears forever flow,

- we can't grieve and
be sorry enough...

all for sin could not atone;

- to absolve our sin and restore
our broken relationship
with the Father...

Thou must save, and thou alone.

- but Jesus can!
And He already did!

Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling;

AMEN!

Welcome to May! So much has been happening around Morganville, let's jump right to it! Phil's mom is home from the hospital and rehab and making slow and steady progress. For those of you just tuning in, back in March a neighborhood dog knocked her down in the street. No broken bones but she was pretty banged up. She had to get home and healed up in time for her first great-grandbaby... Which brings us to our oldest daughter and son-in-law who are expecting their first child late this month....

Donkey Day by Phil Today I'd like to pay homage to the humble donkey, whose unfortunate ancient name has caused much derision and more than a few chuckles. In fact, this poor animal was replaced by a lamb in modern renditions of the classic Christmas song "What Child is This?" If you were ever teased because of your name, you'll empathize with our friend, the donkey. The donkey was domesticated in Africa between 5,000 and 7,000 years ago. They were probably first used as pack animals in Nubia...

Mid-Month Check in Wow, life has been busy around the Morgan household! Not only with Holy week (which is always packed), but on several fronts. Here are the highlights plus an exciting new opportunity! On March 12th, Phil's mom was walking down to get her mail when a neighborhood dog excitedly knocked her down in the road. Fortunately no broken bones, but she hit her head, shoulder, side and hip. She was very bruised, swollen and skinned up. She was in the hospital for just over a week, then...
