Happy October Everybody! This is our favorite time of the year - Leaves changing colors, the nip in the evening air, the Chiefs playing football (that last one is all Pam, but Phil does enjoy watching the animated exchanges with the TV). Above all that, we are enjoying our new role as grandparents! We've been blessed to have a few opportunities to watch our new little buddy and everybody is doing great. Pam is the queen of feeding and book reading time, while Phil excels at naps. (This may have something to do with the fact Phil is really good at taking naps himself). Alec has a long attention span and is fascinated when Phil plays the guitar for him. Papa Phil enjoys the music part, but is chomping at the bit to have a helper in the woodshop. Fun times ahead! We've also been spending quite a bit of time with Phil's mom. She has decided at 91 that she is ready to move into an independent senior living community. We've been exploring the options and touring nearby facilities and everyone thinks this will be a very good move. Going from a house into an apartment will require a bit of downsizing so we've started helping with that as well. We've decided to keep our schedule light for the rest of this year so we'll be available to help with this transition. She was instrumental in us being able to have a busy travel schedule by watching our kids both at home and on the road, and now is the season to slow down and return the favor. We will be doing a few local events but are going to skip our Christmas concerts and extended trips. Next year will be our 30th year in ministry, and we are looking forward to revisiting many places we've sung over the years. We expect our calendar to fill up pretty quickly, so if you'd like us to come to your church, call or email now to reserve a date! Thanks so much to all our faithful ministry partners and financial supporters who allow us to take this time to help Phil's mom. You are a huge blessing to us!!! Have a wonderful month! ADVENT IN THE WOODSHOP - Part two, PEACE We continue our look at Advent through eyes of a wood turner. Last time we selected a chunk of wood in hope of a masterpiece hiding inside. Now it's time to chuck it onto the lathe. We start by trying to find the approximate center of the piece. No matter how close we get, the odd shape of the rough wood will cause the lathe to shake a bit as it turns. We ease the roughing gouge slowly toward the spinning wood and it jumps and jerks in our hands as the...
Welcome to December! It snowed here in KC on the first, so that must mean the holiday season is officially here. In this busy time of year, we pray you take time to savor each moment and remember the great gift from God we celebrate with Jesus' birth. This marks the 25th year of our weekly devotions. Phil wrote the first one on December 28, 1999. (We'll include it below.) We've lost count, but over these 25 years, the number of devotions has climbed into the thousands. Our intention was to...
Home by Phil Last month Pam and I took a little trip to Maine to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. It was a wonderful, relaxing vacation with plenty of lighthouses for Pam and lobsters for me! I'm already wondering what I'll eat, I mean where we'll go for #36. We've spent many nights in various hotels and guest homes during our lives on the road. When I wake up at night (usually because I have to go to the bathroom), I'm not immediately sure where I am. I have to look around to jog my...
