Veteran's Day by Phil Tuesday, November 11 is (or was depending on when you read this) Veteran's Day. Around this time we often think of Jesus' words in John 15:13: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends," with Jesus' sacrifice on the cross being the ultimate example of His love for us. But Veteran's Day is not just for those who gave their lives, that's Memorial Day. Veteran's Day is for all those who were willing to serve our country, to give their time in pursuit of a greater good for everyone. Like the line in America The Beautiful states, "O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife, Who more than self their country love And mercy more than life!" With that in mind, maybe Veteran's Day should make us reflect on the miracle of Jesus even coming to earth in the first place! We humans don't have the best track record of obedience. Right from the very beginning, God told us not to eat the forbidden fruit... We did. God told us not to make for ourselves idols in the shape of anything in the heaven, earth or sea; like for instance, a golden calf... We did. God told us when we enter the Promised Land not to leave any of the previous inhabitants living... We did. The list goes on throughout the Old Testament, but you get the idea. We are not an easy bunch to put up with! We can be so annoying, even Jesus, the picture of patience and love, said, "How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you?" Matthew 17:17 Veteran's Day is a great time to reflect on Jesus' sacrifice not just of dying for us, but living with us! Maybe Veteran's Day should mark the beginning of our Christmas season - The time we celebrate Emmanuel... "God with us." Blessings, Click Here to Check our Concert Schedule! The Path by Phil We are a couple of weeks into the Lenten season. Believe it or not, Lent is not just about Friday Fish Frys at the Catholic church (although I do appreciate some tasty filets!). It is a 40 day focus on seeking God, denying self, and serving others in remembrance of Christ's 40 days of temptation in the desert. The purpose is to prepare for the Resurrection of Jesus at Easter through repentance, reflection, and spiritual renewal. Some denominations observe Lent and others...
Second Chances by Phil Depending on when you are reading this, Valentine's Day has most likely come and gone. Guys, I hope you came through with flying colors and made your little lady feel like Queen of the castle. If that's the case, you can skip this devotion. Now, for the rest of you, I understand how we fellows sometimes misread a situation. I remember one wedding anniversary early in our ministry when I thought Pam would love to celebrate by doing a concert on that day. WRONG. I was...
Intestinally Speaking by Phil All this talk of love around Valentine's Day probably has most people thinking about 1 Corinthians 13 - "Love is patient, love is kind...". Some may even pontificate on the creator of love - "God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them." - 1 John 4. In case you haven't figured it out by now, I'm not like most people. When I think about matters of the heart, I think about body parts, such as... "The human body has many parts, but the many...
