Two Score Less Five Years Ago... by Phil

On October 20th, Pam and I will have been married 35 years. One of my friends asked if we had any "hot topics" we avoid in conversation that would lead to an argument. I thought about it for a while and honestly couldn't think of any. I guess we've mellowed as we've aged, as that was not always the case. For example...

Early in our ministry, our anniversary fell on a Sunday. A pastor called and asked if Pam and I would lead a worship service at his church on Oct. 20. I said, "No problem!" Then I told Pam... and there was a problem. She was thinking we would take that day off so we wouldn't have to work on our anniversary. Well, I had a dilemma. On one hand, I never like to back out of a commitment, and financially we needed to work. On the other hand, I'd lived long enough to know that the saying, "happy wife, happy life" is a powerful truth for a successful marriage. I pondered my situation and after several days I had a stroke of genius! I would write Pam a special song just for the occasion. I hid away at my piano and soon wrote a new tune called, "My Greatest Treasure" that told the story of how we met. When Sunday came I explained to the congregation that it was our anniversary, and I surprised Pam by singing the new song to her. It worked! I was officially out of the doghouse! (This was not the case the next year when I booked another concert on our anniversary and sang that song again. Lesson learned!)

I've written several marriage songs we've included on our albums, but this is still my favorite. After 35 years, these words are just as true as ever...

You are my treasure, You're all I'm dreaming of.
I know that I've been blessed, 'cause God chose the very best.
My greatest treasure is your love.

Happy Anniversary sweetie,
Love, Phil

ADVENT IN THE WOODSHOP - Part four, JOY We've come to the end of our exploration of the themes of Advent - presented in wood! So far in our wood turning journey we've selected the wood, smoothed off the rough edges and shaped it into it's final form. Now it’s time to take our creation off the lathe and put it to use. We may have created a bowl for a yummy salad, a snack platter for holiday entertaining, a vase to hold a bouquet of flowers or a dish to keep rings and jewelry safe at night. Or...

ADVENT IN THE WOODSHOP - Part three, LOVE Welcome back to the woodshop for another look at the themes of Advent. We've selected our log and smoothed off the rough places. Now it's time to get down to the real work of discovering just what is hiding inside this piece of wood. We'll use a variety of tools, some very aggressive to take off lots of material and others very delicate to create fine details. Along the way there will probably be unforeseen places where a deformity or crack in the...

ADVENT IN THE WOODSHOP - Part two, PEACE We continue our look at Advent through eyes of a wood turner. Last time we selected a chunk of wood in hope of a masterpiece hiding inside. Now it's time to chuck it onto the lathe. We start by trying to find the approximate center of the piece. No matter how close we get, the odd shape of the rough wood will cause the lathe to shake a bit as it turns. We ease the roughing gouge slowly toward the spinning wood and it jumps and jerks in our hands as the...
