The Second Hand of God

Here's another blast from the past in honor of our 30th ministry anniversary. Enjoy!

The Second Hand of God (or "Watch It!") - Sept 15, 2015

If you've been following us for a while, you probably know that I'm not the best at fixing things - but that never stops me from trying! Hey, at least it keeps life interesting.

You may also know that I love a good bargain (Pam calls me cheap). When the watch I bought for $5 over twenty years ago recently went dead, I made an amazing discovery. New batteries cost as much I paid for the watch! I did what any good bargain hunter would do, I looked on the internet. Did you know you can get a brand new watch (including battery) on eBay for less than a replacement battery? I was in penny pincher heaven! I browsed the hundreds of watches, picked a cool looking blue one, bid, waited, rebid, waited and won the auction for a little over a buck. Woo-hoo!

A few days later my little package arrived and I tore into it, ready to impress my friends with my stylish new purchase. There was only one problem, the watch didn't look exactly like the picture. It was very slick-looking, but the hands were dark blue on a black watch face, rendering them practically invisible. Not the best option if you actually want to know what time it is. Bummer.

Then I had a thought (this is where Pam usually starts to get nervous). I have a metallic silver sharpie, I could just paint the hands so they would show up. I mean, how hard could it be to take a watch apart and put it back together? I popped the back off, slipped out the battery and some extra unnamed stuff and ran into my first snag - the stem wouldn't come off. No problem, I could sort of pry the face back far enough to stick my sharpie in the gap. I painted up the hour hand (without getting sharpie everywhere, aren't you proud of me?) and moved on to the minute hand. Everything was going super until the minute hand came off the shaft thingie that holds it. Oops. Now time really flew as the hand swung freely around the face. I got some tweezers and tried to reassemble the works when the second hand came off, too. Around this time I thought this might not have been the best idea, but with the help of tweezers, a small screwdriver, a pocket knife and some well-placed scotch tape, I got the minute hand back in place. No amount of effort and patience however, would get that second hand stuck back on. Finally, I gave up, reassembled the watch and called it good. Everything works, and I can tell the time - mission accomplished.

I never realized how much I would miss a second hand. My new watch keeps perfect time, but I have a hard time trusting it. When I look at the watch face, nothing appears to be happening. No little hand clicking away to show the watch is still alive and well and doing it's job. I can't see it working, but when I check back later, I can see that everything is fine and just as it should be.

God is like my watch - not because I got Him cheap on eBay, but because even when it's hard to see Him working, He still is. It would be so much easier to trust God if He had a second hand. I could watch Him clicking away and know that He is busy getting the job done. But instead, it often seems that God's hands are stuck in one position and I wonder if He will even give me the time of day. That's where faith comes in. "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." - Hebrews 11:1. Seeing may be believing, but faith is believing even when we can't see. God is still working, believe it!

I like my new two-handed watch. It reminds me of God - the One who holds my future, even in the seconds when I can't see Him moving.

Take TIME to be Holy,
Phil and Pam

PS. If you’d like, I could take your favorite watch apart and remove the second hand. I mean, how hard could that be?????

Feed Rate by Phil One of the activities I do quite often in my wood shop is resawing lumber (the rest of the world calls it "timber," just in case you have trivia night coming up!) While crosscutting makes boards shorter and rip cutting makes them narrower, resawing makes boards thinner. This is usually done on a bandsaw by running a thick board vertically through its width to make two thinner boards. A properly tuned bandsaw can make a straight cut through the entire length of a board, but...

Permission by Phil This month, something happened that hasn't occurred in the past 26 years - we didn't get our devotions out to our monthly supporters until the end of the month. I know, I hear your gasps of shock and disbelief. This may only matter to me, but I think there just might be a lesson for many of us. First, a little glimpse behind the scenes... I am constantly on the lookout for God's hand at work in everyday life, and when I see something I think would make a good application of...

We come to the end of our month-long look at an episode in the life of Jesus. We’ve looked through the eyes of the four friends, the homeowner, and the students. Let’s wrap up with one of the main characters… Part Four - The Paralyzed Man When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them,...
