The Back of the Drawer by Phil The next time you see an antique desk, open the drawer and admire the fine handcrafted dovetail joinery attaching the face to the sides. Pull the drawer out all the way, and you might be surprised. (If you do this in a historic house or museum, the surprise might come from the alarms sounding and mean-looking security guards bustling into the room. Don't ask...) If you aren't escorted from the premises, you might discover the back of the drawer doesn't share the same exquisite workmanship. It may even be nailed on in a rather shoddy manner. Why is this? Because the builders didn't waste time (and money) on hidden parts that no one would see. There is a saying in modern woodworking: "The ugly side goes against the wall." I don't work like that. Even though my pieces are far from perfect, I attempt to finish each part to the best of my ability - even the hidden parts. This is not a good practice for making a profit, but I specialize in songwriting and woodworking; profit is obviously not high on my list of priorities. My joy and satisfaction come from the quality of my creative endeavors, even if no one else notices. God doesn't skimp on the details either. It's amazing - the more advanced our microscopes become, the more of God's attention to detail we find. I have the feeling that if our most powerful microscope could be multiplied by 100x, we would discover yet another minute universe God packed into every speck of dust. Many people go to the mountains or the oceans to marvel at God's majesty. I find the same amazement by closely examining a leaf. Psalm 19 tells us, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." There is just as much reason to praise Him in the fact that "even the very hairs of your head are all numbered." - Matthew 10:30 The God of the magnificent is also the God of the microscopic. There is nothing too big or small for His attention. My response? Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee; *Carl Boberg, translated by Stuart K. Hine Click Here to Check our Concert Schedule! Hope for the Hurting Heart by Phil On the 14th of this month we observe the day dedicated to love - Valentine’s Day. It is common to celebrate by showering the object of our affection with candy and flowers (which is not nearly as impressive if your person has allergies). Apparently, to truly feel loved it is to be fat and sneezy. Seriously though, for many this is a difficult time as we are reminded of loved ones who are no longer with us. Holidays can be lonely and sometimes accompanied by...
It's In The (Tea) Bag by Phil On our month-long launch into the new year, we've looked at our approach(focus), attitude(joy) and assurance(eternal security). Let's wrap up with the grease that keeps the wheels turning - adaptability. For that, let's look at the humble tea bag. If you've been following me for a while, you already know my feelings toward this most divine of all drinks. Real tea should be brewed (it's in the Bible, just read HeBrews), instant tea is a cruel joke of the evil one,...
Adopted Assurance by Phil On our journey into the new year we've talked about our approach and attitude. Today let's take a look at our assurance. (Are you seeing "A" trend here??) Adoption is a wonderful concept. There are about 4.5 million adopted children in the United States, with over 100,000 kids added each year. The practice of adoption is not new (even Jesus was adopted by earthly father, Joseph), but adoption in New Testament times looked quite a bit different. First, adoption in...
