DIY Don't! by Phil For those of you brave enough to join me on my latest misadventure, here is a little info that will be useful. Many ShopVacs have two ports so hooking the hose to one creates a vacuum and to the other creates a blower. Keep that in mind as you read on... A few weeks ago I went in for a sleep test to determine if I have sleep apnea. After a long time of being tired, falling asleep anytime I sit down and a covert video Pam took of me sleeping where it sounded like I was dying, I thought it was time to check things out. The technician wired me up and I nodded off to la-la land. A short while later he returned to report that yes, I definitely am a proud member of the sleep apnea society. He fitted me with a CPAP machine and back to sleep I went. Three hours later I awoke refreshed, full of energy and ready to face the world! I decided I need to get one of those machines. Now comes the frustrating part. Their doctor had to send paperwork to my doctor who had to contact the company to order my equipment. It's been several weeks and I'm still waiting! So then I had a thought! (For our longtime readers, you know this is the point where things usually go terribly wrong. Well, not to disappoint...) A CPAP machine is just a mask that blows air into your nose while you sleep, right? I have several masks I use for woodworking and a shopvac that blows. That plus a hose and some duct tape and I should be in business! With Pam shaking her head (there always seems to be a lot of head shaking when I have brilliant ideas), I gathered the material and set out to make my own DIY CPAP machine. Everything was going great until I accidentally hooked the hose to the suck port instead of the blow port. The good news is the doctor said my lips should shrink to their normal size in a week or two. He was a little vague if my epiglottis will grow back, but I'm sure that's nothing to worry about. Bonus - my sinuses have never been so clean! The lesson? Some things are fine to do-it-yourself, but when it comes to important issues like sleep apnea or your eternal salvation, you need to go to an expert. Let a sleep doc work on your snore and Jesus on your soul. No amount of duct tape can fix those!

A Better Country by Phil Independence Day can be a difficult time for church worship leaders. On one hand, we should be grateful to God for His blessings and the freedom we cherish. Yet, often times our patriotic fervor exhibited in the music and celebration of July 4th can approach the level of worshipping our country instead of the God in whom we say we "trust." The temptation is to either completely ignore any sort of patriotic music or go full steam ahead and try to squeeze God into our...
Better Dirt by Phil You may be familiar with the story of Naaman the leper, but there is an interesting tidbit in the middle you may have overlooked. We learn in 2 Kings 5 that Naaman was the commander of King Aram’s army and was highly respected by one and all. We also discover that this victorious soldier was afflicted with leprosy. Upon hearing of a possible cure in Samaria, King Aram loaded Naaman up with money and fine clothes to pay for his medical treatment. Elisha the prophet...
True Worship by Phil Leading worship at a local church has been a really fun new challenge for me. In our ministry, even though each concert is unique, there are a set number of songs and stories we choose from. As a worship leader, I now also get to do new songs each week! And since my eyesight is not improving with age, I memorize the music. (I have the lyrics in extra large letters on the back screen so I can read those. Now, if the lyric flipper gets distracted and forgets to click the...
