Choices by Phil When I study the Bible, I like to use several different translations as well as go back to the original languages for specific words. The reason is simple, I like to see how different scholars through the ages have tackled the daunting task of expressing in English what was written in Greek or Hebrew. For the most part, they are very similar, but occasionally there is a slight phrasing difference that brings a whole new clarity to the original thought. Let me give you an example. You are probably familiar with James 1:2 where we are commanded to "Consider it pure joy," or "Count it all joy" when we face trials and temptations. I know what James is saying here, but I've got to admit that it always felt like we should say, "Yippie, my life stinks!" That's a hard one to swallow. But take a look at how the NLT renders that passage... "Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy." - James 1:2 NLT Now, I can wholeheartedly agree with that statement. Notice it says "when" not "if" troubles come (hint: if they're not already here they're on the way.) We don't have any choice in the trouble, but we can choose how we respond. We can be frustrated, angry, forlorn, defeated and depressed... or we can consider it an opportunity to choose joy. And why would we want to choose to be joyful? Read on... "because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing...Blessed is the one who endures trials, because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." - James 1:3-4, 12 CSB Why choose joy? Because the testing or trouble is not the end of the story - it’s just the beginning! If we let Him, God will use that difficulty to grow our faith and make us stronger with more endurance. And all those times we choose to let God grow us through trials will eventually lead to our maturity in Him, and a crown of life in heaven. No, it's not easy and it's not fun when trials come, but even in the most overwhelming situations, we still have a choice. We can choose defeat or we can choose God who "causes all things (even the stinky stuff) to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." - Romans 8:28 NASB Your current situation may be oppressive, but it is also an opportunity. It's Personal by Phil This Sunday we celebrate the apex of the Christian year - Resurrection Sunday, also known as Easter! Most of the year we strive to remember that "it's not about me." We are not the center of our universe, God is, and everything revolves around Him. The message of this season is the exact opposite - "it's all about me." God's love for us is so great, even if you or I were the only person in need, Jesus would have still died on that cross. The crucifixion is the ultimate...
The Distance Between Blessed and Blessing by Phil A popular phrase over the past several years is "Pay it forward." According to Google's AI overview, "Pay it forward" means to repay a kindness you receive by doing a good deed for someone else, rather than paying back the original person, creating a chain reaction of generosity. Instead of returning a favor directly, you pass on the goodwill to a new person, often a stranger, with the hope that they will do the same for someone else. In our...
Authentically Irish? by Phil Happy St. Patrick's Day! Last year we celebrated by taking a closer (and somewhat disturbing) look at St. Patrick himself, who wasn't Irish or even a saint. (Yes, he is recognized as the patron saint of Ireland, but was never formally canonized by a pope, because he lived before the modern, official canonization process was established. Oh, the things you learn in these devotions!) As I said, we already covered that ground, so this year I thought we'd investigate...
