Choices by Phil When I study the Bible, I like to use several different translations as well as go back to the original languages for specific words. The reason is simple, I like to see how different scholars through the ages have tackled the daunting task of expressing in English what was written in Greek or Hebrew. For the most part, they are very similar, but occasionally there is a slight phrasing difference that brings a whole new clarity to the original thought. Let me give you an example. You are probably familiar with James 1:2 where we are commanded to "Consider it pure joy," or "Count it all joy" when we face trials and temptations. I know what James is saying here, but I've got to admit that it always felt like we should say, "Yippie, my life stinks!" That's a hard one to swallow. But take a look at how the NLT renders that passage... "Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy." - James 1:2 NLT Now, I can wholeheartedly agree with that statement. Notice it says "when" not "if" troubles come (hint: if they're not already here they're on the way.) We don't have any choice in the trouble, but we can choose how we respond. We can be frustrated, angry, forlorn, defeated and depressed... or we can consider it an opportunity to choose joy. And why would we want to choose to be joyful? Read on... "because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing...Blessed is the one who endures trials, because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." - James 1:3-4, 12 CSB Why choose joy? Because the testing or trouble is not the end of the story - it’s just the beginning! If we let Him, God will use that difficulty to grow our faith and make us stronger with more endurance. And all those times we choose to let God grow us through trials will eventually lead to our maturity in Him, and a crown of life in heaven. No, it's not easy and it's not fun when trials come, but even in the most overwhelming situations, we still have a choice. We can choose defeat or we can choose God who "causes all things (even the stinky stuff) to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." - Romans 8:28 NASB Your current situation may be oppressive, but it is also an opportunity. The choice is yours.

And There It Goes... by Phil This week did not go according to my plans, which is why you are reading my Tuesday morning devotion on Wednesday afternoon. It all started Sunday when my phone started randomly turning off and restarting. I was reading the scripture in my Bible app along with the congregation, when all of a sudden, there it goes... blank screen followed by reboot, looking for wifi, and reopening app just as the scripture reading was finished. Throughout the day, the trend...
Here Sheepy, Sheepy! by Phil Luke Chapter 15 is probably one of the most familiar chapters in the Bible. It's the Jesus parable trilogy! We start out with the ever popular parable of the lost sheep. Then, like many movie trilogies, we move on to the parable of the lost coin - still good but not quite as memorable as the rest. Finally, Jesus wraps it up with a blockbuster - the parable of the prodigal son. These stories were originally directed at the Pharisees and teachers of the law, but...
Two Score Less Five Years Ago... by Phil On October 20th, Pam and I will have been married 35 years. One of my friends asked if we had any "hot topics" we avoid in conversation that would lead to an argument. I thought about it for a while and honestly couldn't think of any. I guess we've mellowed as we've aged, as that was not always the case. For example... Early in our ministry, our anniversary fell on a Sunday. A pastor called and asked if Pam and I would lead a worship service at his...
