Burning Bushes and Bulging Bladders

We hope you've enjoyed our little trip down memory lane this month. Here's a final devotion from yesteryear in honor of our 30th ministry anniversary. Enjoy!

Burning Bushes and Bulging Bladders - July 28, 2020

You’ve heard the saying, “The Lord moves in mysterious ways.” From burning bushes to pillars of cloud, God uses whatever it takes to get our attention. In my case, that usually involves my bladder. (The quantity of iced tea I drink may also play a part, but whatever the source, it has my FULL attention.)

I was running errands the other day when nature called. Unfortunately, the store I was in didn’t have a bathroom, so I headed next door to Old Time Pottery. I made a beeline (or in my case a peeline) to the back of the store. (As an interesting side note, I know where the restrooms are in every store in town - plus a few trees for emergencies.) Nature and I had a nice conversation and I was headed back to the front of the store at a much more relaxed pace when something caught my eye in the clearance section.

I should back up a bit for clarity. As a result of our accident, Pam has a particularly difficult time with silverware and her somewhat functional hands. The normal stuff is too small for her to grip easily and the bigger ones are too heavy. For the longest time, she’s been using cheap dollar store utensils with plastic handles. They work ok, but don’t last very long and are not ideal for nice dinners. We’ve been looking for actual silverware with larger handles yet lightweight. Trust me, this is not the easiest thing to find. Now, back to our story before I have to go to the bathroom again.

There on the shelf were several settings of nice silverware with hunter green handles. I picked one up and, “Tada!” - it was as light as a feather. (OK, a feather from a really fat bird, but light in the silverware realm.) Best of all, they were on sale for $4.50 per five-piece place setting! Even cheaper than the dollar store!! Be still my thrifty heart.

You might call it a coincidence that the first store’s bathrooms were closed and I had to go next door where I walked through the clearance section where there just happened to be an item I’d been searching for which just happened to be at a price cheap enough to grab my attention, all while making my purchase and returning to my car with dry pants. Coincidence? I call that God coming through once again! (And if He didn’t take me on these little excursions, I wouldn’t have anything to write about here.)

I firmly believe that God still loves us, cares about us, and speaks to us, though sometimes not in the way we might expect. Our job is to pay attention so we don’t miss His still, small voice.

For some folks, that voice may be the stirring of the Holy Spirit in their hearts.

For me, it’s a little lower.

This is a devotion I wrote back in 2013, but it resonates with our themes this month and deserves a second look. Enjoy! Elijah's Widow by Phil Earlier this year we sang for a small church not far from our home. Before the service, the Pastor met with us in his office to pray for the morning. He shared something that really struck a chord with me and has stuck in my mind ever since. He mentioned how we had been on television and sang for large churches over the years. Almost apologetically he...

Legacy by Phil This Sunday is Father's Day, the day we celebrate the high calling of dad-dom with bad ties and BBQ. There is much to say about the importance of a father's role in the lives of his children and the dysfunction in our society brought on by the proliferation of absentee fatherism. Instead, I'd like to take this moment to speak to men in general - fathers, grandfathers, sons, and grandsons. When speaking about fathers, we often talk about the legacy they leave behind. I think...

Feed Rate by Phil One of the activities I do quite often in my wood shop is resawing lumber (the rest of the world calls it "timber," just in case you have trivia night coming up!) While crosscutting makes boards shorter and rip cutting makes them narrower, resawing makes boards thinner. This is usually done on a bandsaw by running a thick board vertically through its width to make two thinner boards. A properly tuned bandsaw can make a straight cut through the entire length of a board, but...
